Camino del Norte: the spectacular coastal route to Santiago de Compostela

The Camino del Norte is one of the most beautiful, but also most challenging, pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. This route runs along the rugged northern coast of Spain, where the Atlantic Ocean, green mountains and charming coastal towns continually alternate.

The Camino del Norte is known for its impressive landscapes, quiet paths and authentic Spanish atmosphere. Unlike the busier Camino Francés, this route is less crowded, but physically often harder due to the many elevation changes.

Where does the Camino del Norte begin?

The Camino del Norte officially begins in Irún, right on the border between France and Spain. Here pilgrims cross the river Bidasoa and begin their journey along the Cantabrian coast.

From Irún the route roughly follows the northern coast of Spain, through the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and finally Galicia, where the Camino joins other pilgrimage routes towards Santiago de Compostela.

The total distance is approximately 800 kilometres.

One of the most beautiful but toughest Caminos

The Camino del Norte is often considered one of the most beautiful Camino routes because of the constant views of sea and mountains. At the same time, it is also one of the physically toughest routes due to the many climbs and descents along the coast.

On the other hand, the route is quieter than the Camino Francés, so you often experience more silence and space while walking.

More than a coastal route

The Camino del Norte is a journey through landscapes full of contrasts: rugged cliffs, green hills, modern cities and centuries-old villages. Along the way, a strong sense of connection with the nature and history of northern Spain often arises.
