Camino Ingles Medal
The Camino Inglés is a shorter but powerful Camino route, ideal if you want to enjoy a real pilgrim experience in less time.
Highlights
Camino Inglés: the historic English pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela
The Camino Inglés is one of the shorter, but historically very important, pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. Centuries ago this route was used mainly by pilgrims from England, Ireland and Scandinavia who travelled by ship to the northern coast of Spain and continued their journey on foot from there.
Despite its shorter distance, the Camino Inglés is known for its varied landscapes, quiet paths and strong pilgrim tradition. It is an ideal route for walkers who want to enjoy an authentic Camino experience in relatively few days.
Where does the Camino Inglés begin?
The Camino Inglés has two official starting points:
Ferrol (most used)
Most pilgrims start in Ferrol, a port city in the north of Galicia. From here the route is about 120 kilometres to Santiago de Compostela, exactly the minimum distance to receive the official pilgrim certification (the Compostela).
A Coruña
A second, shorter variant begins in A Coruña. This route is historically older, but is less used today because the distance to Santiago is too short for the official Compostela (unless combined with extra stages).

Which provinces does the Camino Inglés pass through?
The Camino Inglés runs entirely through Galicia in the northwest of Spain:
- A Coruña
This region is known for its green hills, Atlantic climate, traditional villages and rich Celtic influences. Despite the short distance, the route therefore still feels varied and culturally rich.
A short but intense pilgrimage route
What makes the Camino Inglés unique is its combination of compactness and intensity. In just a few days you walk through quiet nature areas, historic towns and typically Galician landscapes.
The route is less busy than the Camino Francés, but offers the same pilgrim atmosphere: simplicity, encounter and reflection along the way.
More than a short Camino
Although the distance is limited, many pilgrims experience the Camino Inglés as surprisingly profound. The quiet surroundings and the relatively compact route mean that the focus rests entirely on the walking and the experience.
For many it is a perfect first introduction to the world of the Camino, or a deliberate choice for a short but meaningful pilgrim journey.
Interesting cities and places along the route
Ferrol is an important naval port city with a rich maritime history. It is one of the traditional starting points of the Camino Inglés, and for many pilgrims, the journey towards Santiago de Compostela begins here.
A quiet town on the banks of the Xuvia River, with a traditional Galician atmosphere and pleasant walking paths along the water. The Camino Inglés passes through the town, offering pilgrims a peaceful stretch of the journey surrounded by the characteristic landscape of Galicia.
One of the most charming places along the route. Its medieval centre, historic stone bridge and surrounding hills make Pontedeume a much-loved stop on the Camino Inglés.
Betanzos is a historic town with a charming old centre and impressive Gothic churches. The town is also famous for its traditional tortilla de Betanzos, a Spanish omelette known for its soft, slightly runny centre and simple ingredients.
One of the best-known stops on the Camino Inglés. Here, the routes from Ferrol and A Coruña come together. From this point onwards, pilgrims follow the same route towards Santiago de Compostela, surrounded by a peaceful rural landscape of green fields and rolling hills.
From Hospital de Bruma, it is also possible to follow the route towards A Coruña. There, pilgrims can visit the spectacular Tower of Hercules, an ancient Roman lighthouse and one of the city’s most remarkable landmarks. The monument dates back to the 1st century and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Tower of Hercules is also featured on our Camino Inglés medal, making it a special symbol of the route and its rich history.
A quiet town just before Santiago de Compostela. For many pilgrims, Sigüeiro is the last overnight stop before reaching Santiago, making it a place where the anticipation of completing the Camino Inglés really begins to build.
The final destination of the Camino Inglés. The impressive cathedral and the famous Praza do Obradoiro form the emotional endpoint of the pilgrimage. For many pilgrims, arriving here marks the culmination of their journey and a moment they will never forget.
Fun, interesting and special facts about the Camino Inglés medal
The Camino Inglés may be the shortest of the great Camino routes, but the experience is every bit as special. That is why a special Camino Inglés medal has been designed, entirely inspired by this historic pilgrimage route.
The design reflects the maritime history of the English pilgrims, the Galician landscapes and the symbolism of arriving in Santiago de Compostela. Every detail in the medal refers to the journey from sea to city, and from starting point to final destination.
